Transferring phone contacts from Android to iPhone

Switching from one phone to another doesn’t mean that you have to lose all of your contacts. Going from Android to iPhone is nice and easy. You do it by backing your phone’s contacts up in the Google cloud and then syncing them with your new iPhone.

You will need an active internet connection to accomplish this.

Currently iOS doesn’t have an option to filter out contacts that do not have phone numbers attached. Going through with this process with sync all your Google contacts, including email contacts, to your iPhone.

All of these contacts, even the ones that don’t have numbers, will show up as regular contacts on the iPhone. You can fix this by going through and manually adding all your numbered contacts to a custom group (see Step 4) and then only display that group. This is the only method currently available.

You will need iCloud.

Step 1: Ditch your SIM contacts

You will want make sure that you’ve saved all of your SIM contacts to your phone or to the cloud before doing anything.

  • Go to [Contacts] and hit the [Menu] button. Select [Import/Export] and then [Import from SIM].

  • Select either [Phone] or [Google]. Either option is viable. Eventually you will be transferring all contacts from your phone to Google anyway.

Step 2: Auto-backup of contacts to Google

Most Android users have their contacts backed up to Google without even knowing it.

  • Go to [Settings] and find the Accounts section, then select [Google].

  • Tap on your Gmail account. If you have multiple accounts follow these instructions of each account you wish to sync.

  • There will be a box titled “Sync Contacts”, make sure that it is checked. If it already is then your contacts should already be backed up, if not, make sure you are connected to the internet, then check the box and wait a few seconds.

If you have only just saved contacts from your SIM to your phone, you can hit [Sync Now] in the bottom left corner. This will trigger an update and make sure everything is backed up right up to the

Troubleshooting step 2: Manually syncing to Google

If, for some reason, Step 2 didn't work for you, there's a manual route.

  • Go to Contacts and select [Import/Export]. Select [Export to USB storage]. This will create a file on your phone’s hard drive that contains all of your contacts.

  • Connect your phone to a PC or Mac.

  • There should be a file called “Contacts” or “People”. Copy this to your computer

  • Open your browser and go to your Google contacts. Log in.

  • Select [Import Contacts…], then [Choose File].

  • Find the Contacts/People file that you coped to your computer and select it.

This will almost definitely create a lot of duplicate contacts. To fix this clock on [More], then [Merge Duplicates] and the doubles will disappear.

Step 3: Importing to the iPhone

  • On your iPhone open up [Settings] and select [Mail, Contacts, Calendars].

  • Hit [Add Account].

  • Select [Other]. Note: do not select Gmail, this will not allow you to sync phone contacts; only other services, like email and calendars.

  • Select [Add CardDAV Account]

  • Enter your Gmail address in "User Name", Gmail password and a description. The description isn’t crucial.

  • Hit [Next] and you’re all done.

Step 4 (Optional): Adding Contacts to a Custom Group via iCloud

  • Go in to [Settings] on your iPhone and select [iCloud]. Make sure “Contacts” is turned on.

  • Go to iCloud.com and sign in using your Apple ID

  • Open the Contacts app. Your groups are in the left-hand grey column.

  • Click the [+] button underneath the Groups section and name your new group something like "Phone Numbers".

  • Now select the All Contacts group again. Your contacts should all appear to the right.

Drag contacts from the right to your new group. You can do this one at a time, or en masse.

To select multiple contacts simultaneously, hold Ctrl (for PC) or Command (for Mac) while clicking. Once selected click and drag one of the highlighted contacts and the rest will follow.

Clicking on any contact should display its information on the right. If it has a number, make sure you select it for transfer.

Once you have created your groups go back to your iPhone. Open the Contacts app. There should now be a button in the top right called [Groups]. Tap it.

Make sure that only the new Group with your phone number contacts is ticked. This will hide every other contact.

Any contacts that you now add will be, by default, added to whatever groups are active when you add them. You won’t have to manually add each new number to your phone numbers group.
