How to take a screenshot with the Galaxy Note 4

The Galaxy Note 4 isn't even out in most countries, but as soon as you get it, you may want to take a screenshot. If you are an Android newbie, then you might find it a bit difficult at first to do this. There are not one, not two but three ways to do this!

Method 1: the classic way

Press the home and the power button at the same time for a few seconds. As soon as you see an animation on the screen and if the sound is on, hear a click, the screenshot has been taken. You can then swipe your finger down from the top of the screen to share the screenshot right away, or view it in the gallery, where it is also stored.

Method 2: the karate chop gesture way

Like many Galaxy devices, including the Galaxy S3, S4, and Note 3, you can use the palm swipe gesture to make a screenshot, one of the many features brought by the TouchWiz user interface. First you have to ensure that it is turned on in the settings of your Note 4, which you can find under the Motions and Gestures menu. Then you simply swipe the screen with your hand from one side to the other. There will be a sort of scan animation, as well as a sound, which lets you know that it worked.

Method 3: the S Pen way

The final method is one that only Note smartphones can do, because it requires the S Pen, the Note 4’s built-in stylus, to work. The cool thing about doing it this way is that you can actually write notes on it, and edit the screenshot after it has been taken. It all starts with the Screen Write option from the Air Command menu.

  • To access this, pull out the S Pen from your Note 4, which should prompt the Air Command menu to show up. If it doesn’t, you just need to hover the tip of the pen over the screen, as well as press the button on the S Pen.

  • Next, tap on the Screen Write option from the Air Command menu using the S Pen.

  • This will capture the screen, and you can promptly start writing, drawing or scribbling all over it.

As mentioned above, your screenshots are shown in the notification screen, which presents a share button for you to share to your various social networks, email address, etc. Plus, your screenshot is also stored in your gallery app.

Which Galaxy Note 4 screenshot method do you prefer?

Droid Turbo leak gives best look yet at Motorola's stunning new smartphone

The Motorola Droid Turbo leaks have been getting me very excited. We've already received an idea of the kind of specs we can expect from this powerhouse device, and now we've received our best look yet at what might be Motorola's most powerful device ever.

Thanks to an out of retirement tweet from Evan Blass (aka @evleaks), we get a clear view of the red and black models, as well as a look at the front of the device. Being developed by Motorola, the Droid Turbo has a similar design aesthetic to that of the Moto X (2014) and recently revealed Nexus 6, but the Turbo also features a kevlar-hardened backplate similar to that of last year's Droid Maxx. Check it out below.

The Droid Turbo is set to be released as a Verizon exclusive on October 28th. We'll have the confirmed specs and availability information next week, but until then check out our Droid Turbo release date, news, and specs page for more info.

What do you think of the Droid Turbo?

Well, I made the plunge. I got a new Nexus 7 and have been spending the last little while transferring books, music, apps, and everything else over to it. However, one of the apps I use the most, WhatsApp, was a little trickier for me to get than others. By default, WhatsApp isn’t compatible with tablets, but there are work arounds that you can do to make it work and while some involve some complex stuff (such as rooting your device), I found one method that works pretty well. Other than downloading another app and installing an .apk file yourself, this one is pretty straightforward.

How to get WhatsApp on your tablet. / © ANDROIDPIT
Please note: this will create a new WhatsApp account unique to your tablet. If you want to spoof or takeover your account from your mobile device, I will outline a method for this as the end of the article.

  • Download the WhatsApp .apk from the WhatsApp website. In order to do this and to not be redirected straight to the Google Play Store, either use Chrome or Firefox as your browser and then request the Desktop site. From there, click on the Android download and the .apk file will be downloaded to your tablet. (Alternatively, you can just download it on your PC and then transfer it to your tablet via USB, or email.)

WhatsApp3
Whatever browser you're using, make sure to visit the WhatsApp website in Desktop mode. / © AndroidPIT

  • Ensure that you’re able to install Unknown Sources. To check if you are, go to Settings > Security > Unknown Sources. This will allow .apks that aren’t downloaded directly from Google Play to be installed on your devices. ALWAYS make sure you know what you’re downloading and installing if you are going to have this setting enabled long-term.

  • Install TextPlus to your tablet (or a comparable app that is available in your region). This will allow you to get SMS messages on your tablet, which will be required to authorize your tablet to use WhatsApp.

  • Send out a text message to your own phone (or a friends) from TextPlus to get your devices number. Alternatively. You can head to Settings > Contact Info and find out the number for yourself.

WhatsApp4
Using TextPlus (right), or a similar SMS app, to get a number for your tablet. © AndroidPIT

  • Install the WhatsApp .apk.

  • Follow the instructions. When it asks for a number to authorize the application, enter in your TextPlus number. While it won’t authenticate automatically, you will receive a text message with a code that you can use to authorize the app.
    WhatsApp1
Though it won't automatically detect a SMS to your tablet, you will receive a SMS with a code you can enter to bypass this. / © AndroidPIT

  • Once authorized, set-up your WhatsApp account as per normal.

  • Voila! WhatsApp on your tablet!

WhatsApp2
And voila! WhatsApp on your tablet! / © AndroidPIT
Like I said above, this will install WhatsApp as a BRAND NEW account on your tablet. If you are only looking to transfer a WhatsApp account from your current device to your tablet, just use your normal telephone number in step number 6. The authorization will follow the same steps, but your account will be transferred over and it won't be active on your smartphone anymore. If you want to bring over your chat history, check out our previous article on how to do that.

There are different methods of getting around using a WhatsApp on your tablet, but most involve having a rooted tablet and rooted Android phone. I found that this one was simple, and allowed me to get access to one of my favourite apps.

Have you installed WhatsApp on your Android tablet? If so, tell us in the comments how it went!

Live Lock Screen for Windows Phone: Lock screen goes live!

Some of Windows Phone users might complain about the simple and straight forward design of the lock screen and yes we used to say it when we we were bored of it. Microsoft recently released a new Windows 8.1 app that makes the lock screen go live and look more beautiful. Earlier in the Windows 8.1 update some changes to lock screen were noticed but this app is based on a different concept and it beautifies the lock screen in an entirely different way.

LockScreen 400x316 Live Lock Screen for Windows Phone: Lock screen goes live!

Windows Phone Live Lock Screen

To install this new Live Lock Screen app, you may search for ‘Live Lock Screen Beta’ in the store and then hit the Install button. The app comes with five preloaded live designs out of which you must choose the best suited to you. You can edit the background as well. You can add as many backgrounds either from preloaded backgrounds or from your camera roll and then adjust the time interval for automatically changing the backgrounds.

There is an option for Bing Images which automatically replaces the lock screen background with the daily Bing image. The basic functionality of the live lock screen is similar to the default lock screen as you have to slide up to unlock the device.

Each and every detail that was displayed on the default lock screen is also displayed on the live lock screen, there may be changes in the alignment, font or color. Every lock screen design display’s time, date and day. Like the default lock screen, detailed and quick statuses are also displayed.

My favorite design is the one which has revolving circles representing time. For the simplicity lovers, there is a design similar to the stock lock screen but includes minimal fading effects.

Since the app is in BETA there are some issues with the app that you may face. If you’ve installed the app on low end devices then you may experience a bit of lag while unlocking screen and a millisecond pause after the start screen becomes available. Although the app is good and it is something different from the routine lock screen but it has some issues for now.

The Live Lock Screen is an amazing concept by Microsoft, it beautifies the lock screen experiences. Neglecting few issues, I just loved this app and I hope it may get better in the future. Widows Phone 8.1 update is already out for some devices, so if you have Windows Phone 8.1 installed on your device you can download this app for free from Windows Phone Store.

Convert images into Word and Powerpoint files

Smartphones have changed our lives in a big way. They have stopped being just mobile phones. A decade earlier, no one could have imagined phones being used for navigation, video chatting and most important of all, photography. Most Smartphones come equipped with powerful cameras that have made photography more  spontaneous. Another, feature they has, is scanner support. Yes, the feature that I have been yearning long was materialized in the form of an app, the Office Lens app for Windows Phone.

Convert images into Word and PowerPoint files

Office Lens is an app for  that digitalize notes on whiteboards or blackboards and converts them readily into Word documents and PowerPoint presentations that you can edit anytime, anywhere. It’s just like having a scanner in your pocket!

All it requires you to do is take a picture of any hardcopy document using your Windows phone and tap Save. A new Word document is automatically created and saved to your OneDrive, so you can access it on any device. One might ask at this point, what about the quality of the image? Is it compromised? No, not at all!

Office Lens Convert images into Word and Powerpoint files

Although Camera-phone users capture images under diverse conditions resulting in more blurred images or suffering from glare, Office Lens can enhance and align it perfectly. Here’s a whiteboard image taken at an angle exhibiting glare.

Office lens angle Convert images into Word and Powerpoint files

Here’s the image transformed by Office Lens.

Image transformed Convert images into Word and Powerpoint files

Office Lens App for Windows Phone Features:

  1. Whiteboard mode – Reduces and cleans up glare and shadows.

  2. Document mode – Trims and colors images perfectly.

  3. Manage pictures across all your devices as they are saved directly to your camera roll and also into OneNote.

The Office Lens app works wonders during an emergency situation. For instance, what do you do if you’re about to submit an assignment and observe a typo during the last minute reading on the way? Simply capture a screenshot of it using Office Lens and convert it into a new Word file. Thereafter, you can then make the changes on your device instantly and print it again when you get to campus. For PowerPoint, all the handwritten lines and strokes are transformed into PowerPoint drawing objects that can be recolored, resized, repositioned and edited.

Office Lens requires logging in with your Microsoft Account. Your Microsoft Account must be same as the one registered on your device.

While Office Lens can be defined rightly as pocket scanner and works like a charm, it can be made better. For example, addition of an option to save and share as PDF will give another star in my rating. Also, there’s one limitation about the app. It takes max 5 pictures. This limitation should be removed. Get more details on it here and download it free from here.

Xim: A new photo-sharing app from Microsoft for Smartphones

Microsoft Research recently released its latest photo-sharing app called Xim. This unique app is designed to change the way of sharing pictures. It’s not just a photo-sharing tool like Instagram or Flickr, but much more.

Steve Ickman, a software-design engineer who works for FUSE, part of Microsoft Research, quoted:
Our goals with Xim is to change the way people share in the moment. This new technology enhances social interactions and experiences by enabling nearly effortless photo sharing, be it face-to-face or in a remote setting.

Xim app for Windows Phones, Android and iOS

Pick people Xim: A new photo sharing app from Microsoft for Smartphones

You upload a photo on Facebook along with a casual status and after few hours your friends or friends of friends start either liking or commenting on your shared picture. After a while, you find yourself replying to the 100th comment, and the count is still on. But, with Xim you experience an entirely new world of sharing photos. It’s not just a social app for photo share rather it’s designed for expressing ideas.

Furthermore, it not only aimed for kids or teenagers – rather this app involves all the people across the world, called as the Ximmers, to convey their thoughts via their photos in an interactive manner across all phone platforms.

How to share photos via Xim

With Xim users can share photos with their contacts in an easy as well as convenient way. In order to share your photos with your friends, relatives or colleagues, you have just to follow these steps:

  1. Download the app from the store.

  2. Send the link through SMS or email to anyone in your contacts

  3. Being powered with the Web, the shared link runs on all the platforms thus making it easy for your friends to view your shared photos in a go at any place.

Features of Xim

  1. Secure with minimum requirements

Xim is a non-permanent cloud-based app which expires after a little in order to keep storage and connectivity requirements to a minimum. However, Ximmers can save the photos or take screenshots with the help of the additional options which they can see by pressing for long on a photo.

While, we believe that the tech-giant wants to ensure the security of the pictures shared by the users in order to avoid any leaks as we came across in case of the iCloud few weeks ago.

  1. All-in-one Upload

Xim is an integrated platform which can upload photos easily from the device, Dropbox, OneDrive, Facebook or Instagram. Though, currently you can choose up to 50 photos at maximum for sharing in your circle.

  1. Experience of multiple phones in real time

You can install Xim and start sharing your phenomenal clicks with your friends via SMS or emails. Thus, many people can view and browse the same photo content at the same time i.e. multiple slide show of photos in real time. Microsoft certainly replaces tossing of a single phone among the friends to see the photos with an efficient app.

  1. Group chat

This feature adds a different flavor to Xim as participants (with Xim pre-installed) can simply swipe, zoom and pan through the shared images. Further, they can even upload additional photos or add new members to their group.

Xim in action video

Microsoft Research has also released an official video for the public under the tagline “Share your photos, not your phone, with Microsoft Xim”.

Microsoft research team is planning to implement its ideas in the near future. These plans include simplifying the creation of a larger groups quickly; varying experiences for multiple devices like tablets; adding something interesting to Xim beyond photo sharing and many more.

Availability

Microsoft has already released this app for the Windows Phones, Android and iOS platforms. Xim is initially available for download in US and Canada, though other countries will be added to the Xim-circle soon. You can get more details at its home page.

The Windows Registry is a hierarchical database that stores configuration settings and options on Microsoft Windows operating systems. It contains settings for low-level operating system components and for applications running on the platform that have opted to use the registry.

By default, all Windows operating system comes with an editor Registry,
which helps you to explore settings in the Windows registry., But in spite of that Windows comes with a Registry editor, but it is very difficult to deal with, if you are not a professional, and the slightest error could cost the whole system. But In general there are a lot of programs that provide an easy interface to deal with this register.

Eusing Free Registry Cleaner

Eusing Free Registry Cleaner provides safe and quick registry maintenance for Windows computers. This program comes with its own installer and supports many languages. The overall performance is satisfactory but the user interface could use some improvement.
features a basic interface divided into three sections--tasks, selections to scan, and the output window. You can choose to scan the entire registry or just portions of the registry that you feel are causing problems. Some areas of the registry that can be scanned on an individual basis are empty keys, applications, shortcuts, and other key areas. The scan gives you a list of keys that have errors as it finds them. You can peruse the list during the scan. One problem with this program is that since there are typically many registry keys that need to be repaired, there is no mechanism to search for specific keys so that you can further narrow your repair. Instead, you must manually scroll down the key list and decide which ones will be repaired and which ones will be left alone.
Eusing Free Registry Cleaner belongs to "safe" registry cleaners because it allows the user to back up the old registry and windows, as well as create a restore point. If you do these things, you will be protected even if you choose the wrong registry keys to repair. Novice and expert users can easily use this program, although novice users should take care with any app that impacts the registry.
